Melissa X DeAun
In Practice
Melissa X DeAun is a photographer, multimedia storyteller, educator, and community media organizer whose work explores relationships among identity, culture, community, place, and the living world.
Her practice moves between music photography, portraiture, community documentation, and emerging field-based multimedia work. Drawing on photography, writing, sound, mapping, and other forms of media, she is interested in how stories are shaped by relationships and in the ethical questions of who tells them, from where, and for whom.
Rooted in reflective practice, narrative sovereignty, and socio-ecological justice, Melissa's work examines storytelling as more than the communication of information. She is interested in its potential to create connection, strengthen agency and voice, and deepen responsibility to the communities and environments people inhabit.

Ways to Work Together
01
Ethical Storytelling
& Multimedia Narrative Projects
I create photography and multimedia narratives exploring relationships among people, culture, place, and ecology. Projects may combine photography, writing, sound, mapping, and other media forms.
My approach is grounded in reflective and relational practice, with attention to representation, voice, community knowledge, and the ethical responsibilities involved in telling stories.
For: community organizations, researchers, cultural institutions, environmental initiatives, educators, and collaborators seeking thoughtful visual and narrative work.
02
Portraiture & Conceptual Photography
I create portraiture ranging from documentary and editorial work to fine-art and conceptual photography. My approach is collaborative and attentive to the individual, relationship, and context shaping each image.
For: artists, musicians, creative professionals, and individuals seeking portraiture that moves beyond a standard headshot or promotional image.
03
Music, Culture & Reverb Atlas
Reverb Atlas: Dispatches from the Frequencies Between Us is an ongoing storytelling practice exploring sound, music, culture, and place.
Through photography, writing, field observation, and emerging multimedia work, I document experiences from within the communities and environments I encounter. The work is autoethnographic and reflective: rather than claiming to tell other people's stories, I examine what I witness, experience, and come to understand through my own participation and relationships.
For: musicians, venues, festivals, cultural organizations, and community partners seeking documentation grounded in presence and long-term engagement.
04
Education, Workshops & Creative Field Learning
I design photography and storytelling learning experiences that connect creative practice with identity, community, place, and environmental awareness.
Drawing on my background in special education and graduate study, I create flexible, accessible learning environments through photography, visual storytelling, reflective practice, and experiential learning.
For: schools, youth programs, museums, community organizations, and outdoor or place-based learning initiatives.
